When we think of backpacks, we think of hiking. When we think of hiking, we think of Appalachia. When I was younger and in need of inspiration, I would drive to the mountains with a camera, a backpack, and zero plans. Looking for scenic views from the Blue Ridge Parkway and exploring small mountain towns had a way of always giving me what I needed to create something new. I rummaged through countless antique stores, ate lunch at family-owned restaurants, and talked to strangers about their hometowns. Right now, my heart goes out to all of the people in these communities who lost everything to Hurricane Helene, and to the people behind the small businesses that keep these communities running.
